FOCUS FOR THE WEEK – The five steps of Liberation

Hearing, Contemplating, Surrendering, Guru’s Work, Meditation

The spiritual progress of an ordinary person commences with hearing. In other words, feeling good after hearing the talk of a Sadguru or feeling good on reading the literature of some Sadguru. Everyone’s initiation begins this way. After this it is human nature to contemplate, to reflect upon what has been heard or read, and after this, if the mind is convinced then you surrender your feelings to that Guru. In other words you begin to have good feelings towards that Sadguru.

Man’s complete surrender towards one’s Guru only happens when, through the medium of that Sadguru, one experiences Paramatma. This usually happens at the auspicious occasion of “Guru Purnima” (full moon night). But it is not always so that this happens. As long as one remains at the level of the body, till then, the defect of the body’s ego does not allow one to believe this. First of all, man for one, always thinks of himself as superior to others and therefore to accept any other person as superior to himself is very unlikely. To believe this to be so, is likely to be possible only at the level of the Soul. Until you are a pure Soul, you can not see Paramatma in the body form of the Sadguru. To become a disciple is not that easy. To become a disciple is to let go of one’s Ego, which is not easy.

This difficult task is only possible by remaining in very close proximity. When some person remains joined to the ‘Sadguru’ through the medium of the mind (chitta), then gradually he begins to imbibe even the thoughts, behavior & tendencies of the Sadguru. And he does not even know as to when his surrender towards his Sadguru takes place, for his Sadguru’s surrender remains always towards his Sadguru and the same surrendered spirit, he passes on to his disciple.

Satguru also remains the designated “medium” between his Guru and his disciple. The purer and holier this “medium” is, that much more is the Guru’s work happens to be performed through the medium of the “Sadguru”. In reality a pure mind is extremely necessary for performing Guru’s work. And purity of the mind can only be possibly obtained by having complete surrender towards one’s own Sadguru. For Guru’s work done without surrender ties one with good karma since while doing the Guru’s work you retain the feeling of ‘I having done the work’.

Thus on one hand the ego of the body increases and on the other hand the good karma of doing the Guru’s work collects in your account. To exhaust this you have to take another birth. For this reason, only after complete surrender, it is appropriate to do Guru’s work. Since the work you do, after having surrendered, is not done to exhibit to anyone, and it is for this reason that having done the work you obtain ‘inner-happiness- happiness of soul.’

Now the final step to liberation is ‘experiencing’. Doing intense regular collective meditation you begin to have one or another ‘experience’. When in this great ocean of ‘experiences’, you enter through the medium of meditation, then the control of your Soul begins to happen on your body which in turn becomes relieved of the defects of the body. To be free of the defects of the body while still living in the body is the state of ‘liberation’. To obtain this state of liberation is the birth-right of every human being; and this, they should receive. But to obtain this, they take many births. Once the Soul obtains control over the body, this itself gives the ‘experience’ of “divinity within”. Your Soul itself becomes your Guru. This is life’s supreme spiritual state. That you may all obtain this state in your life time is the very purpose of my life.

Lots of blessings to you all,

Babaswami.

I love this message. It is short but Swamiji touches on all topics, chitta, Paramatma, collectivity, soul stronger than body..
The more we stay in collectivity, join the collectivity, our soul will become stronger and the ego will start dissolving. If we are able to experience Divine energy through the Sadguru, and recognize the divine in Him, we will then be able to see the divine in all other human beings. This is the journey from One to Many… 🙂
