Newsletter #87, Musings on Love (15 February 2016)

Hey there,

Yesterday, 14 February, was celebrated as St Valentine’s day when, traditionally, we give cards and gifts to our ‘Valentine’, the one we love.

This week’s newsletter is in honor of that and of our quest for love.

Enjoy!

TOPIC FOR THE WEEK – The basic nature of human beings is to love…

A recent radio interview with a man who had been blind his whole life, revealed how he felt to have fallen in love for the first time at the age of 64. He described it as if – having read the notes of a music score all his life, hearing the odd note but not being able to make sense of it – he was hearing the full score played in all its splendour for the first time, the colours and cadence of the music filling his experience with joy beyond words.

He wished the whole world could feel as happy as he was! His genuine exuberance was evident in his voice; his words full of gratitude and wonder; the focus of his loving attention spoken of with such a depth of feeling that had the power to touch hearts.

There is a quality of experience when we fall in love that feels unique: the ability to see another person with total positivity – seeing no faults, no weaknesses that matter – they are beautiful within and without; being completely present in every moment spent with them; awakening to inspiration and creativity unknown before; sensing a silent communication heart to heart, shared without words; totally accepting and completely at one and in tune with another – touching another’s soul.

This is something we yearn for, strive to find and hold on to. But it isn’t limited to a romantic kind of love. At the heart of spiritual experience, is the knowledge that we are beings of love, we have that at our very core, our Soul. Through meditation we are awakened to our Soul; we realise ourselves as Souls; we learn to see through the eyes of our Soul and, as we experience that bliss, we are transformed into love.

As Swamiji has said many times:

The basic property of water is to flow; the basic property of fire is to burn. Similarly, the basic nature of human beings is to love.
