Newsletter #20, by Sophia (21 Oct, 2012)

This peice was written spontaneously on or just after Lord Ganesh Chaturthi. After our experiences at St Davids I sent it to JCO to share with everyone. Swami says the Muladhara is the chackra for purity and the earth is a place we should use to absorb all our faults and negativity.

“The presiding deity for the Mooladhara Chakra is Shri Ganesha, the Eternal Child. He is the embodiment of innocence and He guards His Mother Kundalini (Gauri) and Her instrument with great alertness and uncompromising zeal.”

Jai Baba Swami

TOPIC FOR THE WEEK – How To Meditate Effectively

(the importance of grounding………. how to sit correctly to achieve contact with the Earth)

When starting out…………

1. We have to be on our body fully before we can meditate effectively and at a high level. A good tip to start you off is to feel inside your body sweeping from your feet up your legs to your torso down your arms your neck and then your head. Take your time whilst doing this until you can feel vibrant pulsations inside your whole body. Of course once we get to Swamis level we don’t have ANY SENSATIONS LEFT IN THE BODY (IT FEELS DEAD) BUT UNTIL THEN being in the body fully helps us progress to that level.

2. Swami G has given the position to sit in on the ground. Sit cross-legged in either; half lotus, full Lotus or just normal cross-legged position making sure your pelvis is tilted very slightly forward so the Muladhar chakra is in contact with the ground. Swami said to do this one should be balanced between the buttock hole and the hole you urinate from. There is a soft part there, that when in contact with the ground starts to pulsate slightly ( teaching given at Penn Rhu )

3. Sitting On the ground means earth, grass, or stone. Wooden floors are okay but not ideal as they do not allow the energy to pass down into the earth; thus we are unable or to surrender and let go of any energy we don’t want and bring up vibrant energy of the earth that we do. Swami G has wooden sandals, which he wears before a large event so that he can keep the energy within his body. NB Plastics or manmade materials have the same effect as wood.

4. We can also hold our feet whilst the legs are crossed as Swami says that position creates a circuit around us. The statue is in this position and Swami advises this will help us achieve a deeper and stronger meditation.

5. Being present in the body also can help us become more balanced. Just try it and see for your self. Notice how thoughtless and balanced you become.

6. When I asked Swami about grounding he said that I should try different ways and surfaces to sit on and from my own experience decide what is the correct place and way to sit. So experiment we are all different, he guides us then ultimately we become our own Guru.

Thanks Sophia for the reminder about how important posture is for enhancing our meditation. I have been playing around not only with posture but also with where I am sitting to do meditation. In the past I have had my back close to a wall in a confined area. Recently I have moved into a more open space and I think it does make a difference. I agree that we all need to experiment to see what works best for us individually – I just wish I was a little more flexible so I could try out more postures!
    Thanks again,
    Kate

Hey everyone Jai Baba Swami…….. I felt to clarify things further was neccesary so these additional comments are important!!!! I missed the deadline else the original would have been changed !!!

Tip 1. is just from personl experience as I tended not be in the body when I began meditating. I hope Sadaks don’t think this is a direct Swami teaching??

Also to add POINT 7 . The most IMPORTANT teaching he gives is to have BARE FOOT contact with th earth as much as possible!! It was an original precept of Samarpan and is in the 1st Madhuchaitanyas!is !!

Yes being bare foot in the ashram is a very special experience Willam. Especially for Sadaks who come from much colder climates where it can be difficult to put your bare feet on the earth outside. Sometimes its sooo cold your feet ache. When you do the energy that flows through you is so powerful its almost tangible. I always face East and put all my attention on my head and repet the mantra. It feels like you are being sucked into the ground, you just get heavier and heavier and your fingers buzz as the flow poors into the Earth. A good tip for Sadaks from frozen climates is to get a Grounding Sheet, Bare Foot Docter sells them, Check it out on line. If in doubt call me to ask any questions about the experince of sleeping in your bed but being attached to the Earth for 8 hours a night!

Oh yer … I sleep on a grounding sheet:0) it is plugged into the earth connetion in a socket that is swithched off: So the earth energy is distributed to my bed via a silver woven cotten base sheet. The first time i tried it ‘at Samarpan house’ courtesy of Carries, the energy arounf my body shifted and earthed it vibrated it was really powerful! I worked up from 5 mins a day on my feet only and after a few months now have the whole sheet on my bed!!
They are only available in the USA but I founf a man near Bham that sells them so I got mine from him!
